Known the world over as the creator of the original Swiss Army Knife, the company started out in 1884 as a cutlery workshop by Karl Elsener. By the time he delivered the first of his pocket knives to the Swiss Army his main business in cutlery was booming. The name Victorinox derives from first, his mother’s name, Victoria and inox which stands for stainless steel. Over the next century Victorinox became the top choice with professionals around the world offering over 300 blade style choices.

Victorinox had been in business for 50 years when New York's R.H. Forschner approached the company to be their sole supplier of cutlery. Forschner at the time owned a business that supplied scales for butchers. The two companies joined forces in 1937 and Forschner became the biggest brand in the US. This brand was as big in the meat packing plants as it was in a 4 star restaurant.

As a division of the Victorinox Company, R.H. Forschner marketed their cutlery under the brand name of "R.H. Forschner by Victorinox". This brand was distributed to commercial venues, food service companies and retail trade segments of the industry.   The brand has been considered the top choice of food preparation professionals the world over with 300 plus blade styles to choose from bearing this brand. But in 2009, the 125th anniversary of the company, it was decided to remove the Forschner brand from all the blades and keep only the "Victorinox" brand name.
